2019 Winter State Championships Wrap up
It has been a swimming September. Over 3 weekends our club has showcased strong representation at 3 state championship events.
6th -8th September was the WA Age & Open state championships.
A team of 40 strong swimmers competed across all events over the 3 day championships, finishing with 64 personal best times, multiple individual podium finishers and importantly our relay teams showing our depth to finish on the podium across both freestyle and medley relays. The championships was capped off on a high with Harrison Hynes and Kelton Rothnie both being selected to represent Western Australia in Canberra at the up coming state team championships.
14th – 15th September saw our Head Coach Nick Watkins take a 5 strong men's army across to Melbourne to compete at the Victorian Open SC championships. Jett “tex” Walker (17), Matt “the burger” Vandenberg (18), Chris “shooter” Purcell (21), Alex Freeman (21) & Dave “Doctor” Hille (32). The team took it to the Vics and made 13 personal best times, with Vandenberg making it through to finals.
Nick said “As always it was great to travel with a team. The boys worked well together and enjoyed a successful meet. It’s an experience to go to different state with new faces to race and a new environment to work in. The boys were all able to apply what we have been working on through the winter in the high pressure situation.”
21st – 22nd September was time for our juniors to show what they are made from. 39 swimmers competed and produced 157 personal best times. With some incredible results all round, particularly in the relays with strong podium finishes and a very exciting 4x50 mixed relay on the Saturday evening with the team taking out the gold medal. Our juniors are showing some real promise for the future when they are able to step up to the age and open level.
Well done to all the Southside Penrhos Wesley swimmers over the last 3 weeks. It has been a very exciting few weeks of racing.
